CIEL AZUR

Tony Meadors and Marc Weinstein
Produced and Engineered by Marc Weinstein
Published February 8, 2023

Tony Meadors - Bass Guitar
Glover Washington - Drums
Marc Weinstein - Keyboards, including Muted Trumpet melody and chorus
Bill Ports - Guitar solo

Track notes:
Tony wrote the original chords and basic melody. I added the chorus melody and arrangement - the muted trumpet melody and chorus seemed to fit the feel of the piece nicely. Glover laid down an energetic, syncopated beat that really improved the feel. Finally, I added the organ solo and Bill added a tasty Steely Dan-esque guitar solo. Solid performances all around, and overall a nice mix.

Ascension

Marc Weinstein
Produced and Engineered by Marc Weinstein
Published September 26, 2020

Marc Weinstein - All instruments

Track notes:
I wrote this song years ago for solo piano, but ended up adding other instruments for a “call and answer” exchange with the piano as well as the chorus and pedal bass sounds to fill in the sonic landscape.

Get Myself A Job

Marc Weinstein, Lyrics by Marc Weinstein and Dave Gibson
Produced and Engineered by Marc Weinstein
Published December 27, 2019

Dave Gibson - Lead Vocals
Jeff Anderson - Rhythm and Solo Guitar
Marc Weinstein - Slide Guitar and all other instruments

Track notes:
Jeff came up with this funky chicken guitar riff which we played around with in the studio, and added a short guitar solo which became the opener of the piece. I built the rest of the song off-line, with a vocal melody written around Dave's voice. Dave laid down vocal tracks in the studio and I suggested he try a vocal scat in the outro, which he improvised on the spot. I think it added a nice touch to the piece.

Status: Work in Progress
Collaboration Opportunity:
The track is fairly raw and needs a lot of work. Guitar, bass, drums and lyrics all need work, but the track captures the song structure and feel that I’m looking for.

Mackin’

John Taylor and Marc Weinstein
Produced and Engineered by Marc Weinstein
Published June 19, 2019

John Taylor - Guitar
Tony Meadors - Bass
Marc Weinstein - Keyboards

Track notes:
We recorded this song sometime in the 1980s on 8-track tape, hence the hiss. We had been playing around with the chords and bass line, and John heard the melody form in his head and started playing around with it. We hit the record button, fired up the drum machine and recorded the song in a single take. I added an acoustic piano part and mixed the song down later.

Eventually I'd like to re-record the tune with a new chorus part, but I was always very impressed with John's guitar work, which was all improvised on the spot. During the break,, I yelled out to John and Tony to "Go up a half-note” - each of us paused to transpose our parts in our head, e counted four and started in again in a new key. Not bad for an impromptu recording!

Lunar Module Space Blues

Tony Meadors
Produced and Engineered by Marc Weinstein and Dave Burris
Published August 28, 2019

Tony Meadors - Bass
Kent Bredrup - Drums
Marc Weinstein - Keyboards
Harry Michels - Guitar Solo

Track notes:
Tony wrote this tune many years ago - now it’s a throwback to an earlier day of R&B and Funk. My only addition was the funk Clav riff. I was going after a Herbie Hancock-esque feel with the synth patch and keyboards. For Harry’s solo, he just started jamming and we hit the record button. Nice work by all…

Unborn

Marc Weinstein
Produced and Engineered by Marc Weinstein
Published November 25, 2017

Marc Weinstein - Keyboards and drum machine

Track notes:
I imagined day-to-day life for a human fetus: all sounds are muffled with the ever-present beating of its mother's heart. On this day, the fetus experiences a range of emotions - comfort, sadness and yearning, triumph and joy - finally settling back into the long wait for birth and falling into peaceful sleep.

All Cried Out

Jill Dowell
Produced and Engineered by Marc Weinstein
Published February 17, 2019

Jill Dowell - Piano and Vocals
Marc Weinstein - all other instruments

Track notes:
Jill wrote All Cried Out and recorded it with piano and voice alone. Years later she played it for me and I liked it instantly. I asked her to send me a copy and, as I listened to it, the rest of the instruments started to form in my mind. I recorded them and sent Jill a mix of the song. She loved it, made a few suggestions and it evolved to what is here today.

Dixie Joe’s

Marc Weinstein
Produced and Engineered by Dave Burris
Published February 27, 2019

Tony Meadors - Bass
Jeff Anderson - Guiltar
Marc Weinstein - Organ and Vocals
Dave Burris - Drum Machine Programming

Track notes:
We were having fun one evening jamming in the studio and Jeff started playing this great little wacka-wacka riff on guitar. Tony and I listened and started joining in and the main riff began to solidify. We thought it sounded pretty hot, so we recorded it. I played with it on my own in the studio, wrote the rest of the tune and added vocals. We finished recording it over a number of weeks and Dave added some nice production to arrive at what we have here today.

Status: Satisfied for now
Collaboration Opportunity:
A live drum set part would really improve the feel.

Roll The Dice

Tony Meadors
Produced and Engineered by Dave Burris
Published March 27, 2019

Tony Meadors - Bass
Chris Taggart - Drums
Marc Weinstein - Keyboards
D-Erania - Tenor Saxophone

Track notes:
Tony composed all the main parts, arranged the tune and we recorded it over a number of sessions. We were recording the main tracks in the studio and came to the end of the song - figuring we had enough time recorded, I stopped playing the piano track and arpeggiated the final chord, never meaning for it to be part of the song. But Tony really liked it and it ended up staying in. D-Erania added the sax solo at the end and Dave finished the piece with some nice effects.

Status: Satisfied for now
