Completed Works
Lunar Module Space Blues
Composer: Tony Meadors
Engineer / Producer: Marc Weinstein
Bass: Tony Meadors, Drums: Kent Bredrup, Keyboards: Marc Weinstein, Guitar Solo: Harry Michels
Published: Aug. 28th, 2019
Marc’s track notes:
Tony wrote this tune many years ago - now it’s a throwback to an earlier day of R&B and Funk. My only addition was the funk Clav riff. I was going after a Herbie Hancock-esque feel with the synth patch and keyboards. For Harry’s solo, he just started jamming and we hit the record button. Nice work by all…
Unborn
Composer: Marc Weinstein
Engineer / Producer: Marc Weinstein
All instruments and programming: Marc Weinstein
Published: Nov. 25th, 2017
Marc’s track notes:
I imagined day-to-day life for a human fetus: Muffled sounds over the ever-present beating of its mother's heart. On this day, the fetus experiences a range of emotions - comfort, sadness and yearning, triumph and joy - finally settling back into the long wait for birth and falling into peaceful sleep.
Collaboration Opportunity:
The track is largely complete, but some tasteful drums or percussion could be interesting.
All Cried Out
Composer: Jill Dowell
Engineer / Producer: Marc Weinstein
Piano and Vocals: Jill Dowell, All other instruments: Marc Weinstein
Published: Feb. 17th, 2019
Marc’s track notes:
Jill wrote All Cried Out and recorded it with piano and voice alone. Years later she played it for me and I liked it instantly. I asked her to send me a copy and, as I listened to it, the rest of the instruments started to form in my mind. I recorded them and sent Jill a mix of the song. She loved it, made a few suggestions and it evolved to what is here today.
Dixie Joe’s
Composer: Marc Weinstein and Jeff Anderson
Engineer / Producer: Dave Burris
Bass: Tony Meadors, Guitar (rhythm and solo): Jeff Anderson, Organ and Vocals: Marc Weinstein, Drum Machine Programming: Dave Burris
Published: Feb. 27th, 2019
Marc’s track notes:
We were having fun one evening jamming in the studio and Jeff started playing this great little wacka-wacka riff on guitar. Tony and I listened and started joining in and the main riff began to solidify. We thought it sounded pretty hot, so we recorded it. I played with it on my own in the studio, wrote the rest of the tune and added vocals. We finished recording it over a number of weeks.
Dave added some nice production to arrive at what we have here today.
Collaboration Opportunity:
A live drum set part would really improve the feel.
Roll The Dice
Composer: Tony Meadors
Engineer / Producer: Dave Burris
Bass: Tony Meadors, Keyboards: Marc Weinstein, Drums: Chris Taggart, Tenor Saxophone: D-Erania
Published: Mar. 27th, 2019
Marc’s track notes:
Tony composed all the main parts and arranged the tune and we recorded it over a number of sessions. We were recording the main tracks in the studio and came to the end of the song. Figuring we had enough time recorded, I stopped playing the piano track and arpeggiated the final chord, never meaning for it to be part of the song. But Tony really liked it and it ended up staying in the piece. Tony brought in D-Erania to add the sax solo at the end and Dave finished the piece off with some nice effects.
Works in Progress
Get Myself A Job
Composer: Marc Weinstein, Jeff Anderson
Lyrics: Marc Weinstein, Dave Gibson
Engineer / Producer: Marc Weinstein
Rhythm and Solo Guitar: Jeff Anderson, Slide guitar and all other instruments: Marc Weinstein
Published: Dec. 27th, 2019
Marc’s track notes:
Jeff came up with this funky chicken guitar riff which we played around with in the studio, and added a short guitar solo which became the opener of the piece. I built the rest of the song off-line, with a vocal melody written around Dave's voice. Dave lay down vocal tracks in the studio and I suggested he try a vocal scat in the outro, which he improvised on the spot. I think it added a nice touch to the piece.
Collaboration Opportunity:
The track is fairly raw and needs a lot of work. Guitar, bass, drums and lyrics all need work, but the track captures the song structure and feel that I’m looking for.
Ideas and Concepts
Mackin’
Composer: John Taylor, Tony Meadors and Marc Weinstein
Engineer / Producer: Marc Weinstein
Guitar Melody and Solos: John Taylor, Bass: Tony Meadors, Keyboards: Marc Weinstein
Jun. 19th, 2019
Marc’s track notes:
Tony, John and I recorded this song sometime in the 1980s on an Otari 8-track in my old studio, hence the tape hiss. We had been playing around with the chords and bass line, and John heard the melody form in his head instantly and started playing around with it. We hit the record button, fired up the drum machine and recorded the song in a single take. I added an acoustic piano part and mixed the song down later.
Eventually I'd like to re-record the tune with a new chorus part, but I was always very impressed with John's guitar work, which was all improvised on the spot. We stopped after two times through the melody and chorus and, while the drum machine was still going, I yelled out to John and Tony to "Go up a half-note", Each of us paused to transpose our parts in our head, and we started in again in a new key. Turned out pretty nice for an impromptu recording.
